Kirkconnell is a rural locality east of Bathurst on Sunny Corner Road, best known for Kirkconnell Correctional Centre, a minimum-security prison for men. It opened on 26 November 1958 as the Kirkconnell Afforestation Camp, closed in December 2011 and reopened on 30 July 2015 after a $4 million upgrade.
Kirkconnell lies roughly 30 km east of Bathurst, in forested hill country near Sunny Corner State Forest, off the Great Western Highway. It is about 34 km west of Lithgow.
There are no visitor attractions in Kirkconnell itself. Sunny Corner State Forest and the old silver-mining village of Sunny Corner are nearby, and Bathurst and Lithgow are each about 30 minutes away.
A taxi over 179 km runs on the meter with no set price, and few will come out to Kirkconnell for a pre-dawn start. Public transport means a coach or drive to the nearest station, a train to Central and a change to the airport line with your luggage — and nothing gets you there for an early flight. Driving yourself means about 2 hr 25 min each way plus airport parking for every day you are away. See the full comparison.
Flying home? We meet you at the rideshare area inside the P7 car park at T1, or the Priority Pick-up area off the P1 walkway at T2 and T3, with free waiting of 60 minutes after an international landing and 40 after a domestic one — step-by-step pickup directions.
Family down the road or a friend on the way — we collect from more than one address on the same run, so everyone travels in one vehicle for one fixed fare. Add the extra stops when you book.
