O’Connell sits on the sealed O’Connell Road between Bathurst and Oberon where it crosses the Fish River. Pickups are at a house, the O’Connell Hotel or the village roadside; surrounding farms may have gravel driveways.
From O'Connell the run goes via O’Connell Road to Bathurst, then the Great Western Highway over the Blue Mountains, about 208 km and 2 hr 52 min to the terminals without stops.
O'Connell sits at about 698 metres, below the coldest part of the plateau, though the run out can still cross frosty or foggy high country on a winter morning.
Neighbours can each book from their own page — the closest areas we cover are Wambool, Locksley and Brewongle.
About 208 km and 2 hr 52 min by road.
O'Connell is a small historic village classified by the National Trust, close to the Bathurst Regional boundary. It sat on the original Bathurst to Sydney road, in use until 1836, and the surrounding O'Connell Plains were named by explorer George Evans in 1813 after Lieutenant-Governor Maurice O'Connell.
O'Connell is about 23 km north-west of Oberon on O'Connell Road, and roughly 23 km south-east of Bathurst. The Fish River runs through it, joining the Campbells River downstream to form the Macquarie River.
Historic sites include the O'Connell Hotel, built in 1865, St Thomas Anglican Church with memorials dating from 1835, and the heritage-listed Lindlegreen pise barn. Hassall Park beside the Fish River is a picnic spot, and Flat Rock on Mutton Falls Road is popular for fishing and swimming in season.
A taxi over 208 km runs on the meter with no set price, and few will come out to O'Connell for a pre-dawn start. Public transport means a coach or drive to the nearest station, a train to Central and a change to the airport line with your luggage — and nothing gets you there for an early flight. Driving yourself means about 2 hr 52 min each way plus airport parking for every day you are away. See the full comparison.
