Gold was found on Caloola Creek in 1853 and reef gold in 1871, and the village (first reserved as Egan) was proclaimed in 1885. Bushrangers including Ben Hall and John Gilbert raided the local store in the early 1860s.
Caloola lies about 28 km south-west of Bathurst and 24 km east-south-east of Blayney, on both sides of Trunkey Road. Newbridge is the nearest settlement, 7 km to the west.
The Caloola Union Church (1865), the former schoolhouse and the cemetery survive and are cared for by a local trust. Old road alignments for Lanarch and Belmore Streets can still be traced.
